Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is a public body responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, and for research into occupational risks in England and Wales and Scotland. As part of its work the HSE investigates industrial accidents. The Executive's duties are to:
- Assist and encourage persons concerned with matters relevant to the operation of the objectives of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
- Make arrangements for and encourage research and publication, training and information in connection with its work.
- Make arrangements for securing government departments, employers, employees, their respective representative organisations, and other persons are provided with an information and advisory service and are kept informed of, and adequately advised on such matters.
- Propose regulations.
Necastle Construction Safety Group
The Newcastle Construction Safety Group was formed in 1962 and is now considered to be the premier organisation for safety in the construction industry in the North East. The group is affiliated to Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA)and the British Safety Council. The objectives of the group are to:
- Promote best practice in safety throughout the construction industry.
- Foster and develop the spirit of co-operation between all parties involved in all phases of the construction process.
- Fully communicate information on health, safety and the environment.
- Provide a forum for continuous professional development.
Meetings are held monthly (with the exception of the main summer holiday months) at which invited speakers address members on current matters of interest. Members may also seek advice on any particular problem. For reference, a register is maintained with details of individual experience and expertise. Membership is open to employers in all branches of construction and to any other associated organisation on payment of a nominal annual subscription. The Principal Construction Inspector is an honorary member.

Constructing Better Health
Constructing Better Health (CBH) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to improving the health of the construction industry workforce. CBH is responsible for delivering the National Scheme for the management of occupational health in the construction industry. It focuses on five key areas:
- Setting industry standards for both work-related health issues, and competency of occupational health provision.
- Building a construction-specific knowledge portal.
- Centralising the collection of work-related health data.
- The transmission of fit-for-task data to enable employers to manage work-related health risks at site level.
- A referral route through to specialists in the field of return to work and rehabilitation.
Constructing Excellence
Constructing Excellence is the single organisation charged with driving the change agenda in construction and is a unique bridge between industry, clients, government and the research community.Constructing Excellence is a cross-sector, cross-supply chain, member led organisation operating for the good of industry and its stakeholders. Its aim is to improve industry performance in order to produce a better built environment.
